For over a decade the student numbers in these schools have been declining due to the lowering standards of education in the schools. Only approximately 30% of student population is Sikh.
Teachers have not been paid as per the government pay scales. This is indeed a very sad day for our community. A community that has always been in the forefront of seva through the world a large, today is saying we are unable to look after the education of our own children. This is when we know that Education is the only way to future proof our community.
The deficit is increasing by approximately 3 crores each month. The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee has been taken to court by the teachers and have said that they do not have the money to pay the teachers
On the 1st of August, 2023 the Delhi High Court has ordered the Directorate of Education, Delhi Government to either appoint an Administrator or to derecognize the schools. Either action will result in our community losing our schools. They will cease to exist! The land they are built on is owned by the DDA and will be taken back by them.
2 out of 12 schools have been closed. As a community we need to decide if education is important to us and if so, we must act NOW to ensure all the remaining schools do not meet the same fate. This would be a BIG STRATEGIC loss to our community & we will be responsible to our next generations, if we keep mum on it.
Successive committees have failed to stem this decay of our schools. Movements like the "Better Sikh Schools" in 2010 attempted to make the "Prabandhak" committee take heed but, did not garner enough support from the sangat. We don't want that to happen again, as this would be our LAST CHANCE to save "Our Sikhi Education"
We, as a community, are equally to blame for the state of our schools. Our reaction to failing standards in our schools was to send our children to non Sikh schools, rather than to raise our voice and to get the "Prabhandak" committee to act and improve our Sikh schools.
Once the crown jewels of Sikh schooling, the Guru Harkrishan Public Schools were providing our children with a great education along with an immersive environment for them to grown up in, with the Sikh philosophy and the Punjabi language. Without this immersion, our children will grown apart from our Guru's core teachings.
